Ooty - Location
Ooty is the short form of Ootacamund (Officially - Udagamandalam), due to the official name it is also sometimes abbreviated as Udhagai. Ootacamund is a popular hillstation and is the district capital of Nilgiri District of Tamilnadu, India. This famous hill station is located at the junction of Tamilnadu, Kerala and Karnataka.
Ooty - Etymology
In early times Ootacamund was know as OttaikalMandu. "mund" is a tamil word for a toda village. The word "Otha-cal" means "single stone" which perhaps refers to a sacred stone revered by the local toda people. Thus the name slowly changed and became "Ooty".
Ooty - History
Ooty was originally inhibited by tribes Todas and Badagas. These people then lived there before british made it there summer headquarters. Badagas were known for farming crops and the Todas for raising water buffalo. The hills were developed rapidly under the British Raj because they were almost entirely owned by private British citizens. British were highly impressed by the beauty of this hill station and named it as "Queen of Hill Stations". It is reached via winding hill roads or a complicated rack railway system built in 1908 by impassioned and enterprising British citizens with venture capital from the Madras government.
